And to anyone not convinced that they can have an impact by contacting venues etc; From memory, so far they have lost at least five shows on prior tour, and (this is not a made up number) at least thirteen support acts were contacted by people and immediately dropped out. Swmrs tactic is to go "hey, we kicked the bad person out so we're cool now" when approaching a venue. But beyond that? The venues and support bands (who are mostly chosen by the venue) do not even know who Swmrs are or their history. Or the ways they have continued to pick at Lydia. And telling them… works. Because who wants to be associated with people like them. If you care about keeping manipulators out of the scene and you've watched this? Go spend a few minutes to write an email. Act.

Thank you for this video. To add a couple of minor (no, no calm down Joey…) notes on that Network song – Carolina happened to be where Lydia's then-boyfriend was from. Who was famous for… a /Netflix/ show. The song also mentions a telecaster… which is what Lydia played usually. It's also very Billie that something like that might get quietly put out on a side project. The timing for it being written as something current to his life then also perfectly lines up.

I wasn't into SWMRS the way I was into FOB, MCR and Panic so this is less relatable to me than your other essays but by god is it still relatable in regard to the whole performance aesthetics of it all. I’ve never heard of this band before but I’m kind of in awe of how many times they managed to tell or talk about punching (or having others) punch random people in the face and constantly talk about how “awful the patriarchy that I am OBVIOUSLY not a part of” was. It’s kind of impressive, tbh.

I read your essay about SWMRS a few days earlier and thought you did a really great job. I didn’t expect for a video about that essay considering the subject and just how in depth you went. Regardless, your video was also great.
The thing that really infuriated me the most was the X Games show tidbit about the kid being lost and the girls there needing to take care of him and find his neglectful dad. And how that dad had the gull, the fucking nerve to yell at the girls who took care of the kid he’s suppose to look after while the band just laughed. Stuff like that, and especially that copypasta email the lead vocalists sent out, is what makes me blood boil. The whole Billie Joe thing is also a huge bummer. Not saying I always expected that man to be perfect (there’s cases before 2020 that showed that), but man… that sucks big time.

AMAZING SHOW STOPPING!!! i was never in this niche subculture but wow. honestly that's why i am extremely skeptical of male celebrities touting themselves as feminist defender of women who crush capitalists or whatever that it feels almost like they are compensating for something…being a former teen girl i sort of went through something not as big but similar being once really into the online art community and it was yikes. it's crazy to me how through the decades people always blame and hate on annoying teen fangirls when in reality nobody puts any blame on the adults who they look up to and follow. of course this doesn't justify any sort of action like harassment but nobody wants to question how manipulative these types of men are to normalize unhealthy behavior and blurring the lines of healthy parasocial interactions vs trying to convince a 16 year old you are secretly besties. i salute you solider and those who went though this. idk if this makes sense but this just feels something so uniquely mid/late 2010s about this culture. the trump years (at least his first term) felt like peak performative activism from liberals just co-opting a lot of leftist terms, aesthetics, etc for sake of being the most woke person in the room without ever actually engaging and understanding it or even advocating for any real change especially celebrities who wanted to get that clout by saying they're cool with gay people while actively ending their actions there, but swmrs…my god they really went all in lol. crazy shit 10/10

I’ve not really heard the perspective of young feminists who were taken advantage of by bad actors from this generation, super insightful and a great watch. Your final point about Billie Joe is dreadful to consider. I hope there is an explanation for his flip and not just his sons position. Though it’s probably easier for him to accept society has made a mistake rather than analyze the faults in his son, and even in his parenting that led his son there. Big ole bummer, but a great video all the same

One of my biggest red flags is "guy whose logical solution to sexual assault is physical assault". The speech at 28:55 REEKS of guy-friend who responds to you disclosing your experience with "tell me who it was! i'll kick his ass!!!". Never mind the underlying ethics of WHY sa is bad in the first place (violation of physical autonomy, touching someone else's body with intent to harm). It's also not lost on me that this approach to SA prevention is one of the FEW that requires zero emotional intelligence, subtlety/tact, OR discomfort on their behalf.
This rhetoric implicitly turns the speaker into this heroic white knight figure, saving us feeble damsels from Bad Dudes (nvm the fact it already happened & we're currently wrestling with the fallout – now he can use his badass patriarchy-training for GOOD!) It's a blatant ego trip, they can't imagine caring about our trauma in a way that DOESN'T centre them as our brave, masculine rescuers. I discovered swmrs at 15 through fueled by ramen back when lose it just came out and i remember being so in love with that song and playing it on repeat for hours, but then for whatever reason i never got into anything they did afterwards. All of this to say, BOY was my jaw on the floor through this entire video !!! I tended to get hyperfixated on bands i liked back when i was a teen and tbh i feel like a dodged a huge bullet because i definitely would have been one of the people bullied off of twitter for questioning their decisions 😅
Also i wanted to say, you shouldn't have to feel embarrassed of your naivete and love for the band, i remember their aesthetic being very cool and alluring and tbh they sound like they were pretty manipulative people overall and it's no wonder that young girls got so attached to them. You cringe at the emails now but I'm sure that at some point writing them meant a lot to you and i hope that someday you'll be able to read them again and feel peace lol. Sucks that they used them as an opportunity to try and further manipulate you and their fans overall
